Capable

When inclusion is a part of the picture, everyone thrives.

We launched the Capable Portrait Campaign in 2017 with the mission to showcase diverse perspectives on life in our community, provide adult role models for our youth, and demonstrate the power of inclusion. Every year, models are nominated and selected to be featured at our portrait exhibition and their powerful stories are proudly shared with the community on social media.

James Hughes Barefoot

"I am an artist, an animator, and a Virginia adventurer!"

Photographer: Scott Elmquist

How would you describe yourself in one sentence?

"I am an artist, an animator, and a Virginia adventurer!"

Are you in school or employed? How do you spend your time most days?

“James participates in a number of Jacob's Chance programs — including acting, music, art, culinary and sports — and he volunteers once a week at the Byrd Theater. He also enjoys going to the gym each day where he LOVES to swim. Jame is applying to the Longwood Life program at Longwood University, and is really looking forward to that new opportunity.”

What are other organizations you are connected to?

“James is incredibly thankful to everyone at Jacob's Chance, the wonderful staff and kind volunteers who create amazing programs. He is also thankful to everyone at Wall Residences, with whom his dad serves as James' Direct Service Provider. James' life has been blessed by so many wonderful friends.”

What do you want the community to know about your life in Virginia?

“James loves going on his many "Virginia adventures" — like spending time at the beach, Williamsburg, King's Dominion, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and Charlottesville. He loves to travel around Virginia and explore new movie theatres he's never been to before. He also enjoys hiking with his dogs and going fishing on his jon boat on the James River. James named his boat "Wendy Darling" because she made the lost boys feel loved and safe and through her stories took them on grand adventures!”

When do you feel most capable?

“James loves to share his art with others. He regularly gives his drawings to friends, teachers and acquaintances. He most enjoys sharing his animations, short films and stories on his YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/@JamesHughesStudio), for which he does all the voice acting. He feels so proud and thrilled every time someone experiences and appreciates his art. It's how he has chosen to connect to the world around him.”

What do you want others to know about your disability?

“When it comes to a powerful talent for creating art, stories, and characters, and seeing the world around him in beautiful, new ways, James is uniquely CAPABLE where many others are not.”

What does your perfect day look like?

“James would have pancakes for breakfast at the Silver Diner in Richmond, go swimming at ACAC, then to Busch Gardens to ride roller coasters, then to see a new movie at a Regal Cinema he's never been to before, have dinner at the NY Deli in Williamsburg, and home to Richmond for a milkshake at Kilwyn's in Carytown!”

What challenges or barriers do you face daily?

“James courageously faces the many daunting challenges that Autism can present each day. He has managed to chart his own path despite the odds. He has so much to share for anyone who takes the time to listen. He is an inspiration to everyone who knows and loves him.”

What are your goals for the future?

“When he was younger, James dreamed of one day working in a movie theater and being an animator. He has made both these dreams come true by working at the Byrd Theatre and by teaching himself how to animate on his iPad and starting his own YouTube Channel. Now he dreams about one day ‘going to college at Longwood University and becoming a grown man who helps to love and protect others.’”

What else do you want to share about yourself?

"I love movies. I love to laugh. I love to cook. I love to draw and make videos. I am a happy, good, grown-up man."

Mark Roelen

What do you want others to know about your disability?

What does your perfect day look like?

“Taking a day trip somewhere, I love to travel.”

What challenges or barriers do you face daily?

“I tend to get stressed out and anxious a lot, but that’s only when a family member is in the hospital or something like that.”

Louie Rey

Photographer: Erin Van Vleet

How would you describe yourself in one sentence?

“Louie is a charming, fun-loving kid who wears his emotions on his sleeve and expresses his love through the "language" of physical touch.”

Are you in school or employed? How do you spend your time most days?

“3rd Grade. Most of Lou's weekdays are spent at school, but when he's out of school he spends most of his time with his family and dog, Hali. We love to be outside and are fortunate to live in a walkable (roll-able) neighborhood where we can access our public library, local coffee shop (we love you, Perk!), playgrounds, and trails. We also love the live music scene and reading aloud together as a family. Our current family projects are working on memorizing passages from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and learning the hymns that we can hear chiming each day from a neighboring church.”

What are other organizations you are connected to?

“We've long been involved with disability rights advocacy through The Arc of Virginia and attend a weekly class at River City Inclusive Gym.”

What do you want the community to know about your life in Virginia?

“When those supporting Lou presume his competence and give him the opportunity to try and try again.”

What do you want others to know about your disability?

“Louie was born with a genetic syndrome called ATR-X Syndrome, and he will have multiple disabilities his whole life. It's a relatively rare syndrome, and thanks to the internet, we've been able to connect with other families internationally whose lives are also affected by the syndrome; it's an expansive experience!”

What does your perfect day look like?

“Waking up early and enjoying a homemade breakfast right away while we talk around the table as a family. Heading out for a morning walk and catching a good, strong breeze along the way. Running into neighbors or friends we know driving by who call out, ‘Louie!!!’ Wrestling his brother JP or snuggling up as a family on the sofa. Hearing a favorite song spontaneously come on WNRN, especially if it's Jack White's "Shakin'." Going to a local haunt like Maymont to visit a fellow Louis (the otter) or for a swim at the pool then spoiling our lunch with something sweet like the banana brownie or anything chocolatey from Perk! Bon Air. Meeting up with friends at Brown's Island for a Friday Cheers show, stretching out on a blanket or standing up to dance, and enjoying a night walk over the T. Pott Bridge back to the car.”

What challenges or barriers do you face daily?

“Inaccessible spaces and closed-minded, unimaginative people.”

What are your goals for the future?

“Lou loves to climb and is hoping to try rock climbing sometime in the next year.”

What else do you want to share about yourself?

“Louie is fortunate to experience equine therapy through Galloping Acres a couple of seasons each year where he gets to ride a pony named Peanut. He once won the “most enthusiastic" superlative because of how hard he laughs while trotting.”

“I am fiercely and lovingly determined.”

Photographer: Kat Jones

How would you describe yourself in one sentence?

“I am fiercely and lovingly determined.”

Are you in school or employed? How do you spend your time most days?

“I go to school in Richmond City! I will graduate from preschool this year and start Kindergarten at my neighborhood school in the fall! I start every morning insisting to make scrambled eggs and toast with my mom, I then ride to school with my younger brother where I make him giggle the whole way there. After school I play for hours with my big brother. I love chasing my shadow in the sunlight, soccer, swing sets, music, and acting out scenes from my favorite Disney films.”

What are other organizations you are connected to?

@downsyndromeva @centralvadance @rvaschools

What do you want the community to know about your life in Virginia?

“I love spending time outside whether it's rainy and I'm splashing in puddles or a hot summer day and I'm swimming in the pool so Virginia's four seasons are perfect for me. I also love living in the city where parks and playgrounds are a walk away. Most of my family lives in Virginia too! I'm lucky to have a lot of cousins, many of whom live in the same city as me. Being silly and having fun with my family is where I am my happiest.”

When do you feel most capable?

“When people let me do things myself! I know my family, friends, teachers and peers are around to help keep me safe as I learn so many things (I just turned 5 and there's so much to learn!), but I feel my most capable when they support my curious and determined nature to navigate the world on my own.”

What do you want others to know about your disability?

“One way my disability shows up is in my speech. I'm still learning a lot of words as you know them, but don't think I don't understand! My comprehension of language, spoken and unspoken, is much like yours. And, if you want me to communicate with you directly, all it takes is a willingness to look and listen closely.”

What does your perfect day look like?

“My perfect day starts with an episode of Mickey Mouse clubhouse snuggled on the couch with my Mom. When it's time to eat, I like to make scrambled eggs for my family and cinnamon raisin bread toast for me. My tastes change, but these are my go-to show and food choices at the moment. After breakfast I like to venture outside for some time in my backyard playhouse or swing set. My favorite afternoon may include venturing to my cousins’ house, checking out a park or playground, playing dress up, or going to dance class at Central VA Dance Academy. If we're riding in the car, make sure to turn on the Hocus Pocus 2 soundtrack and put 'One Way or Another' on repeat! I don't shy away from an afternoon nap, either. For dinner, I'd choose to be propped up in a booth at Mi Jalisco restaurant, eating copious amounts of chips and salsa any day of the week. I usually end my day with some Bluey or one of my favorite Disney movies. When it's time to turn in for the evening, I prefer to hold a book while my mom or dad reads it but it's not long before I'm sound asleep!”

What challenges or barriers do you face daily?

“One of the biggest challenges I face daily is people underestimating my abilities. I will admit, I like to take my time doing things like getting myself dressed, shoes on, getting into the car, or completing certain activities and sometimes it doesn't keep the pace of what others are doing around me. This does not mean that I can't do things, I just do them at my own speed! I also find that people don't take the time to communicate with me because I communicate differently than they do. My parents often say that I remind them to slow down and take more time.”

What are your goals for the future?

“I'm looking forward to going to school with my peers and other kids in my neighborhood! I'm a natural-born performer, so one day, you'll likely see me as an actor or involved in the theater or movies. One thing is for certain, whatever I decide to do I will achieve it!”

What else do you want to share about yourself?

“One of my greatest gifts is that I let things go quickly. I get frustrated, sad, and mad but I don't stay there for long. I forgive and choose joy more often than anything else.”

Nicole Marsh

“My disability doesn't make me less of a person or a person with less abilities. My life has meaning and purpose. I am smart, I can learn, I can make friends, I can work, I can be independent, and I can love and be loved. I want everything out of life that any other person wants.”

Photographer: Kat Jones

How would you describe yourself in one sentence?

“I am funny, helpful, friendly, and super independent!”

Are you in school or employed? How do you spend your time most days?

“Both! I am currently in the Culinary Program at Tech, and next year, I will be in the Baking and Pastry Program. I am a part-time substitute school nutrition staff in the school cafeteria. I spend most of my time with my family, friends, and learning new culinary skills!”

What are other organizations you are connected to?

“Dandelion Springs Apiary, Free Horse Art, Va. Down Syndrome Association of Richmond, Jacob's Chance, Henrico County Public Schools and Hermitage Advanced Career Education Center.”

What do you want the community to know about your life in Virginia?

“Everyone is special with or without a disability. I am way more than my disability. It doesn't matter if I am different; I have many things and ideas to offer and bring to a team. Anything is possible if given a chance.”

When do you feel most capable?

“When someone looks beyond my disability and sees my abilities. My chef in my culinary program believes in me, and I am learning to work with my disability to do amazing things!”

What do you want others to know about your disability?

“My disability doesn't make me less of a person or a person with less abilities. My life has meaning and purpose. I am smart, I can learn, I can make friends, I can work, I can be independent, and I can love and be loved. I want everything out of life that any other person wants.”

What does your perfect day look like?

“Waking up and making my breakfast and lunch, getting ready for school or work. Working hard at school or work while being with friends. I love to learn new skills, so school and work are important to me. When I get home, I play with my pets, help with dinner, and get ready for the next day. Once that is done, it is "me time." I love to read, listen to music or watch TV with my family. During the week, I attend Capernaum with friends or other social groups.”

What challenges or barriers do you face daily?

“Reliable, on-time, safe, cost-effective transportation to get me to my job or other social activities. They see the characteristics of Down syndrome first and prejudge me, thinking that I am less capable than I am. People with disabilities face a shortage of meaningful employment. Allowing me the independence I have earned while offering grace while I navigate in public. I might be slower counting my change back, but I can do it. I might be slower purchasing tickets, but I can do it. I love getting my hair and nails done; just show me grace as I complete the transaction.”

What are your goals for the future?

“I want to work in the culinary, baking, or pastry industry. I want to have a successful job and be able to show my leadership skills to the company.

What else do you want to share about yourself?

“I like when I have someone who helps me learn something and then lets me do it by myself. I don't like crowds or the dark. I love checklists to help me stay organized and not forget to do something. I like to go at my own pace because I dislike making mistakes. I love to smile.”

It's a relatively rare syndrome, and thanks to the internet, we've been able to connect with other families internationally whose lives are also affected by the syndrome; it's an expansive experience!”

What does your perfect day look like?

“Sleeping in, enjoying a leisurely breakfast while listening to WNRN, going on a morning walk then out for an adventure (maybe to a local museum, out for a river walk at Reedy Creek, or meeting up with friends). The comfort of hearing an old familiar poem recited aloud (we love John Updike's A Child's Calendar poems for each month), followed by some sort of novelty to the day, like maybe a new restaurant or hearing a new song for the first time. Spending time with grandparents. Laying in a dog pile as a family and laughing hard until Mom says, "Breathe!" Ending the night dancing to music at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens or listening to drumming and chanting of The Red Army at a Kicker's game.”

What challenges or barriers do you face daily?

“Inaccessible spaces and closed-minded, unimaginative people.”

What are your goals for the future?

“The past two summers JP swam on our pool's swim team (let's go, Woodmont Wahoos!). But his next ambition is to work at the snack bar there!”

What else do you want to share about yourself?

“JP is playing percussion in the 6th grade band this year. His cousin, Wesley, who is also a percussionist, gives him the 1:1 support he needs to play the bells. His instrument is adapted to only include the bars he needs for the songs they perform. They were thrilled to play a compilation of Queen songs together at JP's debut concert this past winter.”
